July 9, 2011 -- A Day To Be Remembered

July 9, 2011 is a day to be remembered when Malaysians of all races unite together for one cause....a clean and fair electoral reform. Hubby's office was closed for that fateful day and from the minute we woke up at 9am both our eyes were fixed on the TV screen and computer screen avidly watching those brave fearless Malaysians take a stand for a fair and clean election.

News, photos and videos came in from the public on the ground as well as the media covering the event. I wish I had saved or downloaded all of them on Saturday as it is a bit hard to keep track of everything when it is all over the internet.

The purpose of this blog is to record this for future generations down the road to see for themselves what really happened that day. Especially since the government of the day is denying police brutality or firing teargas and water cannons into a hospital premises.

It was organized by Bersih.org. 

Bersih means clean in Malay. It is the electoral watchdog comprised of sixty-two NGOs. One of the NGO is Marina Mahathir, the daughter of former premier Mahathir Mohammad. A permit was applied for a peaceful assembly to present an eight-point-memorandum to the King but the police turned down the application and declared the organization and rally illegal.

What is the eight-point-memorandum that Bersih wanted to submit to the King? 

1. Clean the electoral roll
2. Reform postal voting
3. Use of indelible ink
4. A minimum campaign period of 21 days
5. Free and fair access to mainstream media
6. Strengthen public institutions
7. Stop corruption
8. Stop dirty politics

Malaysia Is NOT My Country According To Mahathir

Great! Thank you, Mahathir, for telling us that Malaysia is not our country. So, since I am not a Malaysian, I have no obligations to it!! Don't count on me to defend the country if there's a war. Thank you for making your thoughts on the subject crystal clear.


From now, I shall place my loyalty with UK, since it's the only other country I've ever lived in, and also because my late grandmother was a British citizen although she had never visited Britain, nor spoke the language. 

Politics, Folitics, Fodlitics, Foodlitics

I'm in a dilemma. What title should I give this post? The subject matter has something to do with food and politics. Wait a minute. What has food and politics in common? Well, nothing really, except perhaps a politician needs to eat?

Or, how about a cafe bearing the logo of a political party?

We've passed by this cafe numerous times but have never actually stepped inside until Deepavali last Friday. I mean, a political party cafe? Are they serious about the food or are they more focused on political propaganda?

And we would still not have stepped inside had we not been searching for Restaurant Ho Fun, a cafe selling Ipoh kuey teow in both soup and dry version. Despite walking up and down the five-foot pavement a couple of times, we could no longer find this cafe. The address is No. 18, Jalan SS2/63, and we knew it is a few doors away from the KTZ Cafe. At last, we decided to check the actual no.18 unit by counting the shoplots. 

In Malaysia, most of the shops don't display their address, not to mention the unit number anywhere on their premises, so you'll have to look for two lots with a number and start counting down, or up, as in our case.

When we finally reached no. 18, we found ourselves at the DAP Rocket cafe. Looks like Restaurant Ho Fun is no longer around. We're stuck, because at 2:45pm, all the other restaurants nearby have closed their kitchen and no longer takes any orders. Our only other option is McDonalds, which we would rather pass.

I must say it's somewhat disconcerting to be sitting and eating under the armpit of Lim Guan Eng, the Chief Minister of Penang. Throughout my meal, my imagination ran wild and I kept thinking I could smell his armpit. I could certainly see his armpit hair, that's for sure, and I thanked my lucky stars that there's no ingredient resembling hair in my bowl of laksa.

I ordered the Penang Assam Laksa and the soup base is just right, not too sour. I did not add the lime that was served with it. Although the price is a little steep for assam laksa in a cafe, at RM7.90 it is still a reasonable price considering the very generous amount of mackerel fish in it.

I only remembered to take a picture after having eaten like, two mouthfuls.  :)

Hubby ordered the Fried Prawn Noodle. It came with a combination of yellow noodles (the ones used in mee goreng) and laksa noodles. The taste was right up hubby's alley, with lots of egg-ish texture, which wasn't particularly my cup of tea.

The cafe is registered under the name of Just Change Sdn Bhd. 

Cats Take To The Streets In Protest

Last night, an unprecedented incident in the history of mankind took place at Jalan Bukit Bintang, Kuala Lumpur. Cats came out in droves on the streets, wearing hats and carrying placards in protest of the 100-storey mega tower that would be built at the site near Stadium Merdeka and Stadium Negara.

"That's a sign that the End of the World is coming. Our cats normally reside in Kuching, a special city zoned for cats in Sarawak, a state in East Malaysia," a witness said. 


Seen running after her cats, trying to catch them and put them back into their carriers is FurLin, who told CNN (Cats News Network) that she doesn't know what came over her cats. She was having dinner at Healy Mac's, an Irish Restaurant in Bukit Bintang when her cats broke free from their carriers, donned their hats and ran off to join other cats that were similarly attired. 


"They just went nuts," she said, pointing to her cats in the pink straw hat and red cowboy hat. "Before they dashed off, they meowed that the RM5 billion ringgit would be better used to build a  Cat Village to house all the poor and homeless," chirped her husband, FurNut.


When approached, the cat in a pink straw hat said, "Look, the money could be used to help the poor and improve public hospitals and clinics". 


"Humans should improve their education system so that they are at least half as smart as we felines. The money could be used to improve the public transport system, and thus ease the massive traffic jams in the city. Instead, they are using the money to create even more traffic jam. This just proves what we knew all along --- humans are not fit to lead a country," the cat in a red cowboy hat added.


The protest is against the government's planned Warisan Merdeka project announced in the recent Budget 2011.

The Obama Diaries - Fact or Fiction?

According to the author, Laura Ingraham, she saw a thick manila envelope lying on the bonnet of her car at the basement parking of Watergate Complex. As she picked it up, a mysterious stranger "hidden in the shadows of a stairwell called out in a deep baritone voice, "Just read it. You'll know what to do." She shouted back, "Who are you? What is this?!" The mystery man stood silent for a few seconds before vanishing......"(page 9)

When she opened the envelope at the W hotel about a hundred yards from the White House (she claimed she didn't drive home as she was afraid to), she discovered that the enveloped contained the handwritten diaries of President Barrack Obama, Michelle Obama, her mother Marian Robinson, Vice President Joe Biden, Rahm Emanuel, David Axelrod, and others who are involved in the Obama's Presidency campaign.


And so she decided that the rest of America deserves to know what their President, the First Lady, The First Grandmother, the Vice-President and the entire campaign team had written in their diaries. 


My first thought was, isn't that rather convenient? The busiest people in the world actually has the time to write a diary and they ended up in her hands? I also thought that the part about the mystery man in the shadows booming out to her to read it and that she'll know what to do with it sounds a little bit like a bad script out of a B-grade movie.


Anyway, I decided to continue reading. And I think those "diaries" are not authentic. Why? Well, besides the suspicions I expressed in the paragraph before this, Barrack Obama has worked very hard in the campaign. It just didn't make any sense that he would trivialize his own inauguration. But most of all, it is the language used in the "diaries". The language use is that of a gossip monger passing on a juicy, slanderous gossip to another. To me, the style of writing is not the type one would use when writing a personal diary. 


Based on the above, I think the diaries are either planted, or Laura Ingraham cooked up the whole thing on her own as a publicity stunt at best, or worst, as a hatred campaign against Obama. 


She certainly comes across as very anti non-Americans, and considers being American as an exceptional and special race, and that America has a right to dictate to the rest of the world. But this is just my personal opinion. I'm curious to know what others think. 


So, if you have read the book, please share your opinion with me. I'd love to discuss it, even if you disagree with me. In fact, especially if you disagree with me. I'd like to know why you disagree and see it from a different perspective. And if you haven't read the book, but would like to, please let me know, and I'll email you a copy.  :)

A Second Letter to Akhramsyah Muammar Ubaidah bin Sanusi

This second letter to Akhramsyah is in response to his recent article in his blog titled "Half A Million Ringgit of Misplaced Generosity....".

Your most recent article showed you for what you are: a bitter young man who fear that his political career might  not go far ever since his father, Sanusi Junid, was sacked as the IIU President in 2008.


This time, you don't even have any valid points to make, misinformed though they were. I would have simply ignored your post, except for the way you ended it.


"I also hope that the absence or reduction of violence from Monday does not give everyone a false sense of security. The violence is probably reduced as people are at work..." (quote)


This statement of yours is intimidating and threatening. Are you trying to incite more hatred and violence? Do you take pleasure in seeing the country in turmoil? This is dangerous, and someone should report you for your seditious comments.


And please do not speak on behalf of all Malays. I happen to have quite a few good Malay friends, and they don't agree with  you. The majority of Malays are peace-loving, not an extremist like you. Unlike you, they do not think that Muslims should be encouraged to torch churches, or hurled rocks at Hindu temples, as reported in today's news.


Go get a life! 

A Letter To Akhramsyah Muammar Ubaidah bin Sanusi

Dear Akhramsyah,

I've never read a more preposterous statement than this. This is a classic example of someone who has insufficient information and makes a judgement based on little bits and pieces of information.

First, your point on non-Malay leaders calling Malays "pendatang". May I remind you that it was a Malay leader who first called the non-Malays "pendatang". How would you feel, if someone were to call you a "pendatang" when your great-grandparents or grandparents have taken up arms to fight together with them, stood together with them, to protect Malaysia? Would you not retaliate and call them "pendatang", since according to Sejarah, the real bumiputra are the indigenous people (orang asli)??  

Second, "No majority ruling race has happily allowed for the culture of other races to bloom other than this country ruled by Malays." May I remind you that in the whole wide world, there isn't a country where the minority supports the majority, where 90% OF THE TAX IS PAID BY THE MINORITY. In all other countries, it is the majority that carries the minority, but in Malaysia, it is the minority that carries the majority. In Malaysia, we have a mouse carrying an elephant!!!!  

Third, "Most Malay students have nowhere else to go other than public universities whilst non-malays can go private!". Are you sure of your facts? Have you looked around? There are many non-Malays who are NOT able to afford to go to a private university. There are many non-Malays who live in small flats, who work day & night to feed their family, many who can't get a job because most corporate companies are now bumiputra-owned, and as a last resort, are selling pirate DVDs, or going from table to table in coffee shops selling RM10 items? Are you aware of this?  

Wake up, it is NOT the non-Malays who are screwing up the Malays. In fact, the non-Malays actually sympathise with the Malays who are poor, because we know that the people who are screwing the Malays are a few Malays who are in power. Those few Malays are the ones who took all the money meant for the Malays (money contributed by non-Malays) and use it for themselves.  

So, please check your facts before you speak.

Life In Malaysia Is Stranger Than The Movies

Life in Malaysia is like a box of chocolates....you never know what you're going to get. Each morning you wake up to be amazed at what you read in the news.

First, we have the Pahang Syariah Court ordering the whipping of part-time model Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno for consuming beer in a hotel lounge. (read more here)

Then, we have the Andy Lau-Carol Chu debacle. Whoever heard of a son-in-law who is ashamed to be seen at his father-in-law's funeral procession?

To the extent where he was shielded from view from head to knees by numerous silver umbrellas??!! It's preprosterous! (Last wish of Carol Chu's dad, Son-in-Lau goes under cover and Quite a scene at funeral of Chu's dad)

Is he ashamed to acknowledge the Chu family? After all, they are not rich and famous, owning only a nondescript business selling incense worship items. Or does he still want to play the field? Or does he have the same under cover relationship with another or more women??

And then, today, PAS Youth amused me by condemning the Michael Learns To Rock concert which will be held in Genting on September 5. The party chief said his party would not hesitate in mobilising its members to prevent the concert from happening if the performance was not stopped. (read more here)

Excuse me, Nasrudin, have you ever heard any of MLTR's songs? They are love ballads, not metallic rock or whatever it is that you imagined them to be! Please do not protest for the sake of protesting. It only makes a laughing stock out of you.

The Teaching of Maths & Science - Have You Voted Yet??

The government has flip-flopped again, due to pressure from some quarters. It has been decided today that the teaching of Maths & Science will revert to the Malay medium.

Many educated people are against this for the simple reason that Malaysia will be left behind globally if we are to teach these two subjects in Bahasa Malaysia.

But let's not look at the future.....let's look at the present and now....how on earth are we going to translate those scientific words into Malay overnight??

Mahathir put it succintly.....

Obama Retook the Oath of Office

It loooked like there was another word that was mis-spoken. Chief Justice John Roberts used the word "to" instead of "of, besides the wrong placement of the word "faithfuly".

According to the Consitution, Obama became the 44th President of the United States at noon on 20 January regardless of whether the oath was taken or not. 

However, to dispel any confusion or future court cases, and questions that Obama might not be a President legally, Barrack Obama retook the Oath of Office in the white house yesterday.

Just to recap the oath that took place on Tuesday:

Justice Roberts: .........that I will execute the office of President to the United States faithfully....

Obama: .......that I will execute......(pause, realizing the mistake and probably deciding whether to follow)

Justice Roberts (simulatenously with Obama): ....the off....faithfully the pres......the office of the President of the United States....

Obama (simultaneously with Justice Roberts): ....the office of President of the United States faithfully....

This must be the blooper of the year.  :)

Blackie Welcomes America's First Black President

Despite the late hour and hubby having to go to work this morning, we stayed up to watch the inauguration of Barrack Hussein Obama as the 44th President of the United States. 

 

Millions of people braved the cold and turned up to cheer him and to celebrate the occassion, and as the time drew near for the swearing-in, I could feel the excitement and anticipation building as chants of "O-ba-ma....O-ba-ma" rang out. 

And then, the moment to take the Oath of Office arrived. Looking suave and handsome in a black suit, white shirt and red tie, the President-elect stood up, raised one hand, and placed his other hand on the red bible that was used to swear in President Abraham Lincoln in 1861. I was surprised to note that the bible was still in pristine condition. I guessed it was kept in a museum until yesterday? :)

During the Oath of Office, there were some "oops" as the President-elect and Supreme Court Justice John Roberts talked on top of each other, got their words fumbled and there were a couple of awkward pauses.

Justice Roberts said, "I, Barrack Hussein Obama, do solemly swear (pause) that I will execute the office of the President of the United States faithfully."

The Oath is supposed to be, "I, Barrack Hussein Obama, do solemly swear that I will faithfully execute the office of the President of the United States."

The President-elect followed Roberts for a few words before realizing that the word "faithfully" was in the wrong place. Cool as a cucumber, he stopped (but you could see he was restraining himself from laughing) and nodded in a regal way, like as if saying "try again". After that, he tried to say the words ahead of Justice Roberts to get him back on track. 

But what really got me cheering loudly, and forgetting that I'm not an American, nor am I living in America, was his rousing, bold and powerful speech after he was introduced as the President of the United States. He gave a call for action, calling upon Americans to pick themselves up, dust themselves off, and remake America. It was unifying, and it was rallying. I found myself nodding in approval.

He had some words for Muslim countries: "To the Muslim world, we seek a new way forward, based on mutual interest and mutual respect. To those leaders around the globe who seek to sow conflict, or blame their society's ills on the West -- know that your people will judge you on what you can build, not what you destroy. To those who cling to power through corruption and deceit and the silencing of dissent, know that you are on the wrong side of history; but that we will extend a hand if you are willing to unclench your fist."

He also had words of warning for enemies of America: "We will not apologize for our way of life, nor will we waver in its defense, and for those who seek to advance their aims by inducing terror and slaughtering innocents, we say to you now that our spirit is stronger and cannot be broken; you cannot outlast us, and we will defeat you."

I hope his mission to reverse all the damages done by the Bush administration will not be opposed by the Congress. A President, after all, has no real power if he's not backed and supported by the Senate.

We Love Rascists

Forgive me if I misunderstood and got it wrong, but this is the message that is being proclaimed far and wide in our beautiful land of Malaysia.

Ahmad Ismail, the suspended UMNO chief of Bukit Bendara, Penang, was given a warrior's welcome, befitting a national hero, when he turned up for the division's delegates' conference. Ladies and gentlemen, this is our hero, the guy who said publicly that all Chinese are squatters in this country and that we don't deserve any rights.

He was welcomed with cheers, a kompang (drums) troupe and silat performances. The emcee announced that the headdress, shawl and dagger were presented to Ahmad to show that he is a true Malay warrior. Read more in The Star.

The moral to be learned here is, if you want to be recognized as a hero, throw slanderous, racists remarks at one another. Better yet, stab each other with a dagger. This is progress. We have arrived. 

Thank you, Ahmad Ismail, for being such a racist, and causing a young, innocent female reporter to be arrested under ISA for reporting truthfully what you said! Nah!   

Are You A Democrat Or A Republican?

Come 20th January next year, we'll have a Democrat US President. We know the names of the parties, but do we know what they stand for or believe in? For me, I've always leaned towards the Democrats......hehe, like as if I could vote in any US elections. Anyway, let's take a look at a few salient points.

A Republican is a Conservative, while a Democrat is a Liberal. What does that mean? I think Ambrose Bierce summed it up succintly.....haha.

Conservative, n. - A statesman who is enamored of existing evils, as distinguished from the Liberal, who wishes to replace them with others.

But other than that, let's take a look at how a Democrat and a Republican approach certain issues.

• Abortion

- Democrats are for abortion. Unwanted pregnancies is seen like drug addiction or alcoholism, which needs government intervention.

- Republicans are against abortion unless it's their own daughters that got knocked up. Then they shipped her off to Switzerland.

• Wild Animals

- Democrats believe that all wild animals should be accorded all the rights of a human.

- Republicans believe that wild animals are put there for sport hunting, or the occassional fur coat. That was why Sarah Palin shot at the wild animals from the helicopter. She was looking for a free fur coat.

• Capital Punishment

- Democrats are compassionate and are opposed to capital punishment unless the victim is one of their own.

- Republicans believe in an eye for an eye. That was why Bush invaded Iraq after the World Trade Centre was hit by hijacked planes. It didn't matter who was the perpetrator, as long as someone got punished.

• Privacy

- Democrats believe in the sacred right of privacy. 

- Republicans do not see why you would want privacy if you haven't done anything wrong.

• Racial Issues

- Democrats believe that the minority races are disadvantaged and need government help

- Republicans are fond of the minority races as they make well-behaved house servants

So, which are you? A Democrat or a Republican? What about our government? I do believe that the ruling coaling, BN, is a Republican when it comes to racial issues. Oops, are they going to arrest me under ISA for this post?? 

Anwar's Press Conference Live Video Disappeared

The live video that I saw at 2:20pm today has disappeared (the link I posted in the earlier post titled "PKR has enough numbers to form a new government). I wonder what happened to the video? Was it banned? But it wasn't seditious or anything, surely? Oh well, what do I know......I'm just a mixed-up, confused  housewife who can't even tell East from West.

PKR Has Enough Numbers To Form The Government

Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has just announced at a press conference that he has the numbers needed to form the new government. When one reporter asked him for the numbers, he said he has more than the numbers required. 

He has asked the current government for a smooth transition of power, that they do not shred any parliamentary documents or evidence as they had done when the government lost the Selangor and Perak seat to Anwar's Parti Keadilan Rakyat on March 8, 2008.

He also asked that the government not to arrest any of his supporters, or the MPs under ISA to prevent them from forming the government. You can watch it in www.anwaribrahimclub.com

Wow, I never thought I'll live to see the day when a new government can be formed by the crossing over  of MPs. This will be a classic case study for political science students. 

Reporter Tan Hoon Cheng Released

I just returned home from dinner to hear it announced on telly that the Sin Chew Daily reporter, Tan Hoon Cheng, who was detained under the ISA on Friday was released at fourish this afternoon.

She is now reunited with her family in Bukit Mertajam. Yay!!! I hope she is not too traumatized by the ordeal. I know I would be, were I in her shoes.

A Housewife's Plea: Please release Tan HC

This morning, I woke up to a shock! The Sin Chew Daily reporter, Tan Hoon Cheng, and Teresa Kok were arrested under ISA last night at their homes. What for??

As I mentioned yesterday afternoon, Raja Petra Kamaruddin was arrested at his home at 1:10pm. That, I could understand, as the government has been eyeing him for some time now. But Tan and Kok? What have they done wrong? And Tan was in handcuffs like a big time criminal!!

Tears filled my eyes when I saw the picture. She is just an ordinary person, not a politician and was only carrying out her duty as a journalist to report on what transpired. What she wrote had to be approved by the editorial board. And if what she wrote wasn't true, why did Najib publicly apologize for what Ahmad Ismail said?

Please do not make her the scapegoat. Please release her.

RPK Arrested Under ISA

Author of Malaysia Today blog, Raja Petra Kamaruddin was arrested at 1:10pm today in his house under the Internal Security Act section 73(1).

The arrest came at the same time as the order to the Multimedia and Communications Commission (MCMC) to re­instate access to all blocked websites, including the controversial Malaysia Today.

It is reported in the Star's website five minutes ago that the Energy, Water and Com­mu­nications Minister Datuk Shaziman Abu Mansor said the order was made because there were other “harsher” laws in the country, under which authorities could take action against the owners of blogs and websites, instead of blocking it.

No Room For Personal Vendetta, Ahmad Ismail...

Last night, I couldn't believe what I was seeing on telly. Ahmad Ismail called for Gerakan to leave the ruling coalition, Barisan Nasional. And to add further drama, his supporters took down Dr Koh's poster and tore it to bits and pieces.

Hello.....we know you have a personal vendetta against Dr Koh, Ahmad, but you are a politician, and you should know better than to turn a personal quarrel into a racial discord. If you have made a mistake in one of your speeches, just apologize for it. We won't think any less of you for that. In fact, we might even respect you more. All great leaders are not afraid to apologize. Learn from them.

Or, learn from Wanita Umno chief Tan Sri Rafidah Aziz. Below is an excerpt taken from The Star dated September 9, 2008.

"Earlier, Wanita Umno chief Tan Sri Rafidah Aziz said Malaysians should not question each other's racial backgrounds and issues regarding nationality and loyalty."

Such a mature and wise outlook. She is truly the Malaysian equivalent of the Iron Lady (Margaret Thatcher of London). She really deserves all the respect I have for her.
